If it hadn't been so crowded and noisy I could have thought I was playing a part in Les Misrables as I joined the group at Capitol Garage (which, it turns out, is not a garage at all but a bar and grill which just happens to be close to where several garages are located which serve the Capitol). The purpose of the meeting (using the loosest possible definition of meeting) was to officially introduce some of the people who have been active in the reorganization of the Sacramento Chapter of the ACLU. I think they called them "activists" in the e-mail which I suppose places the rest of us in a category called "inactivists". With a little bit of imagination one could imagine that we were plotting the overthrow of the PTA or the library board maybe but that crowd could never be accused of plotting anything serious.
Oh, we also heard the report of Natasha Minsker (sounds like a made-up name to me but she was attractive and quite personable), ACLU-Northern California Death Penalty Policy Director on hearings that were held today by the California Commission on the Fair Administration of Justice (CCFAJ). She had to yell over the noise of the crowd since 3/4 of the cafe's customers were NOT there for an ACLU meeting. I didn't get much other than that if California has to have the death penalty, the ACLU wants to make sure it is fair and the ACLU doesn't consider the current implementation of the death penalty to be fair.
The last thing I heard before the meeting dissolved into total chaos was a promise that the next meeting will be held someplace a little quieter.
