Some of the best adventures start at home and sometimes you don't even know what you've got at home until someone comes to visit. This weekend we had our youngest son and his wife visit us from Santa Cruz and we took the opportunity to show them the Effie Yeaw Nature Center. We've known about the Center almost from the day we moved here almost 6 years ago and we've heard such great things about it. It's close enough to our home that we could ride our bikes there. In fact, we've ridden our bikes in the neighborhood several times. But we've never quite made it over there until today.
Although you have to pay $4 a car to enter the Ancil Hoffman park, entrance to the Nature Center itself is free. There are dozens of hands-on, interactive exhibits as well as live animals in the center such as garter snakes, possums, and a scrub jay. There are also numerous exhibits of stuffed animals in realistic looking natural habitats. A very small gift counter allows you to purchase a souvenir if you wish.
We enjoyed one of the three 3/4 mile nature trails that begin just outside the nature center. Each one highlights a slightly different aspect of the 77 acre preserve. We were fortunate to see 3 deer and 4 turkeys in the wild as well as 2 butterflies engaged in serious reproductive discourse. We'll undoubtedly be back several times.
